The Montessori Curriculum

What is Montessori?

Montessori is the educational philosophy established by Dr. Maria Montessori around the turn of the century.  Dr. Montessori spent years methodically studying the natural learning habits of children.  She devoted the latter half of her life to developing a methodology and materials that addressed “the absorbent mind” and provided children with environments, materials, and instruction that help them naturally reach optimum levels of development.

The foundation of the Montessori philosophy is respect for the individuality and uniqueness of each child.  The children are presented with specialized activities, materials, and lessons that develop social skills, emotional growth, physical development, cultural awareness, and academic achievement.  The Montessori approach prepares children to be good citizens and lifelong learners.

At Hagerstown Children’s School, we’re based in the Montessori Curriculum, because we want to prepare our students to love learning, and develop the confidence and curiosity to love life.

The Montessori program is really something special. It develops a child's natural sense of curiosity, it gives them a chance to explore.
