Mission & History

Our Mission

At Hagerstown Children's School, our trusted educators foster self-directed learning, good work habits, self-confidence, self-reliance, and creative and critical thinking skills in the youngest members of our community. The guiding philosophy of our non-sectarian, non-public, no-profit school is based on the work of Dr. Maria Montessori, and is founded in peace education, community service, and nurturing the whole child in her pursuit of learning. As members of a larger society, we engage as neighbors and practice acts of generosity, kindness, and peace.

Our History

Hagerstown Children's School was founded in 1994 by a group of local families that came together to create a unique program that focused on providing quality early childhood education based on the Montessori philosophy.  Those founding families worked for many years to lay the foundation of a strong organization that could meet the growing needs of the tristate area well into the future.

We have since grown from a one room preschool serving 20 students a year to 6 classrooms that currently serve more that 120 students, 2 years old through kindergarten.  As the need for quality early childhood education increases and the demand for our unique style of programming expands we plan to continue to broaden our student population and provide a Montessori based education to more children.

The Montessori program is really something special. It develops a child's natural sense of curiosity, it gives them a chance to explore.
